29th March, 2007
Two new markets have been
completed and handed over to the people
of Kissi-Tongi and Luawa Chiefdoms in
the Kailahun district.
The markets at Buedu and Kailahun towns
were constructed through the Public Works
Programme (PWP) of the National Commission
for Social Action (NaCSA) as part of its
Social Action Support Project (SASP).
The occasion was marked by a one-day Agricultural
Field Day and Trade Fair to enhance the
Government’s Food Security drive
in the district.
Commissioning the completed markets,
the President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmed Tejah
Kabbah told the people that after the
war, government is doing everything to
promote the welfare of the citizens. The
markets, he said, will enhance the socio-economic
livelihood of the women in Buedu, Kailahun
and neighbouring Communities, who trade
in the daily and weekly markets, create
jobs for youths in the chiefdoms and improve
the Social-economic situation.
The Chairman, Council of Paramount Chiefs,
P.C Kailondo Banya II, said that as Buedu
is a boarder chiefdom, it has enormous
potential for trade in food stuffs and
other agricultural products. He explained
that before the construction of the market,
women faced difficulty to trade their
wares in the open air, with big losses
and low prices during the rains. The structure,
he said, will now create a conducive buying
and selling environment for petty traders
in the district.
